Dr. Proszkowiec-Weglarz is a poultry physiologist by degree and molecular biologist by training with over 20 years of experience studying poultry physiology, endocrinology, nutrition and microbiology. She has received her Ph.D. in 2003 (Agricultural University, Krakow, Poland) in animal science. Her postdoctoral research at USDA-ARS, NEA, Animal Biosciences and Biotechnology Laboratory (Beltsville, 2004-2008) was focused on feed intake, body weight and energy balance regulation in broiler chicken. As the Assistant Research Professor in the Animal and Avian Sciences Department at the University of Maryland (College Park, 2008-2016) Dr. Proszkowiec-Weglarz’s research focused on better understanding of the regulation of growth hormone production and on calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in broiler chickens. As the appointee to the research Participation Program, at the FDA, CFSAN (ORISE Fellowship, 2016) she was involved in studying the bacterial-ovary interactions for differential colonization of Salmonella serovars in laying hens. Currently, as the lead scientist of CRIS project focused on novel integrated nutrition and health strategies to improve production efficiency in poultry at USDA, ARS, NEA, Animal Biosciences and Biotechnology Laboratory (from 2017) Dr. Proszkowiec-Weglarz’s work focuses on assessing, developing and applying microbiome- and metagenomic-based strategies in poultry to define the role of the microflora in the regulation of nutrient uptake and utilization in the gastrointestinal tract during post-hatch development in broilers. Dr. Proszkowiec-Weglarz is interested how the microbiome develops in poultry, if the microbiome can be manipulated and if it can be used as tool to develop alternatives for antibiotics growth promoters.
