Shilpi is responsible for the development of communications strategies that advance the goals of the Break Free From Plastic movement. As Global Communications Lead, Shilpi builds alliances and communications flows between Europe, Asia, and North America, and serves as a trusted source for plastic pollution stories. Since 2017, Shilpi has been instrumental in ‘messaging the movement’ with intersectional voices and playing a foundational role in the US arm of the movement.
Prior to joining Break Free From Plastic, Shilpi worked at Mission Blue | Sylvia Earle Alliance to further their mission of igniting public support for a global network of marine protected areas. She comes with a decade of experience in ocean advocacy and conservation policy including coalition building around plastic waste prevention. Her writing has been published in The Economist; Yes! magazine; the Stanford Journal of Law, Science & Policy; Huffington Post, and National Geographic Ocean Views.
Shilpi loves living in Oakland where she spends her spare time hiking, practicing yoga, and exploring California’s biodiverse coastal ecosystems. She’s also the founder of Samudra Skin & Sea, a zero-waste skincare line featuring wild-harvested seaweed.
