Current research on probiotics is often hampered by limited knowledge on the (often personalized) interplay between the probiotic and the microbiota. As such, novel rationally designed probiotics in combination with clinical trials that specifically target responders only may greatly increase the odds for obtaining statistically significant interventions. In this lecture, both aspects will be discussed by showing recently published results. Topics that will be discussed include:
- Strain and product specificity of probiotics
- The first steps towards rationally designed probiotics
- Strategies for optimizing clinical trials with probiotics to obtain statistically significant results
