After gaining a liberal arts bachelor’s degree in science, studying chemistry, education and comprehensive science from the University of Cincinnati (Ohio), Rachel completed her master’s degree in physical organic chemistry, working in photochemistry and molecular modeling. She loves science and people and is inspired to learn about things that are hard to see and challenging to measure.
Rachel joined P&G in Beauty Care Upstream Technology at P&G’s former Miami Valley Laboratories in 2002, where her research focused on discovering novel materials for hair care, color and cosmetic products. From this research, Rachel built predictive models that bridged technical performance and composition to consumer perception and safety.
After five years in upstream technology development, Rachel moved to the product development team for both Skin Care and Hair Care and Color, working on Olay, Pantene, Aussie, and for the last seven years, Herbal Essences. After working on the Herbal R&D side for five years, Rachel has transitioned to the role of Herbal Essences’ Senior Scientist and Communications Director, based on her ability to communicate the science of Herbal Essences’ innovations in a compelling way, as well as her ability to deploy the brand’s initiatives across the globe. Her unique role spans from scientific research and innovation to communication development and influencer marketing. She collaborates with experts, external and internal scientist and innovators to bring cutting-edge knowledge into P&G’s research programs while building brand love for Herbal Essences.
Rachel’s scientific expertise areas include cosmetic chemistry, skin and hair physiology, as well as hair care technology development, sustainability and design thinking. She represents P&G Beauty at press and industry events and at scientific and academic conferences. Additionally, as a mother of two daughters, Rachel has a tremendous personal and professional passion for STEM education, creative thinking and sustainability. She is an active volunteer, working to make the world a better place.
