Daniel S. Johnston, Ph.D. is Chief of the Contraception Research Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Dr. Johnston received his undergraduate degree at Colby College and completed his Ph.D. in reproductive biology at The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Washington State University. Dr. Johnston has extensive experience in private-sector pharmaceutical research and development, including as a team leader at the Women’s Health Research Institute at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, where he worked on small molecule programs to identify, validate and develop inhibitors against targets for male and/or female contraception. His research interests have included gametogenesis, gamete maturation, fertilization, andrology, biomarker development, oncology, hematology and contraceptive development, particularly the use of proteomics, transcriptional profiling and bioinformatics for drug target and biomarker identification. Dr. Johnston has a long track record of research, research oversight and management, executive service, and effective relationships with industry, academic institutions and investigators, contract research organizations, and government agencies.
